When your CRO asks "Are we ready to compete against [Competitor X]?" — what do you say?

Most enablement leaders answer with proxies: "We updated the battlecard last month," "We covered them at kickoff," "The team has access to the competitive portal." These answers describe activity, not readiness. They tell you what was made available, not what was learned.

A competitive readiness scorecard replaces guesswork with data. It measures whether your reps can actually handle specific competitor objections under pressure — not just whether they read the document.

What a readiness scorecard looks like

At its core, a readiness scorecard answers four questions:

  1. Are reps practicing? (Practice frequency)
  2. Can they handle it? (Objection handling scores)
  3. Are we covering the right competitors? (Competitor coverage)
  4. Are we getting better? (Improvement trends)

At a glance, you can see that Tom needs intervention (low frequency, low scores, declining), Maria is your strongest competitive rep, and the entire team is weakest against Competitor B.

The 4 key metrics

Metric 1: Practice frequency

What it measures: How often each rep practices competitive scenarios — whether through AI drills, peer practice, or manager-led sessions.

Why it matters: Frequency is a leading indicator. Reps who practice 2-3 times per week consistently outperform those who cram before a big deal. Like physical training, competitive readiness is built through regular repetition, not periodic intensity.

How to track it: Count completed practice sessions per rep per 30-day rolling window. Distinguish between types (AI practice, peer drill, manager session) if possible, but total frequency is the primary metric.

Targets:

  • Green: 6+ sessions per month (roughly 2x/week)
  • Yellow: 3-5 sessions per month
  • Red: 0-2 sessions per month

Common pitfall: Don't just measure sessions started — measure sessions completed with a score. Some reps will open a drill and abandon it to inflate their numbers.

Metric 2: Objection handling score

What it measures: How well a rep handles specific competitor objections under pressure, scored on a consistent rubric.

Why it matters: This is the core output metric. Practice frequency is input; handling score is output. A rep who practices 10 times a month but doesn't improve has a different problem than a rep who doesn't practice at all.

The scoring rubric (1-5 scale):

How to track it: Score every practice session. If using AI-powered practice, scores can be automated. For peer or manager sessions, the evaluator scores using the rubric above. Track scores by competitor — a rep might be a 4.5 against Competitor A and a 2.0 against Competitor C.

Targets:

  • Green: 4.0+ average across all practiced competitors
  • Yellow: 3.0-3.9 average
  • Red: Below 3.0

Metric 3: Competitor coverage

What it measures: What percentage of your team has practiced against each of your priority competitors within the last 30 days.

Why it matters: Individual rep scores don't tell you about organizational readiness. If 3 of your 10 reps are excellent against Competitor A but the other 7 haven't practiced at all, your team isn't ready — you just have 3 reps who are.

Coverage answers the question: "If any rep on this team walked into a competitive deal against [Competitor X] tomorrow, would they be prepared?"

How to track it: For each priority competitor, calculate the percentage of reps who have completed at least one practice session in the last 30 days. Then calculate the percentage who have scored 3.5+ (the "proficient" threshold).

This matrix tells a clear story: you have reasonable coverage against Competitor A, but Competitor B is a gap — half the team hasn't practiced and only 30% are proficient. If Competitor B is appearing in 25% of your deals, that's a revenue risk.

Targets:

  • Green: 80%+ coverage with 60%+ proficiency for top 3 competitors
  • Yellow: 50-79% coverage
  • Red: Below 50% coverage

Metric 4: Improvement trend

What it measures: Whether individual reps and the team as a whole are getting better over time.

Why it matters: A snapshot score is useful but incomplete. A rep at 3.0 who was at 2.0 last month is on a different trajectory than a rep at 3.0 who was at 4.0 last month. Trends tell you whether your training program is working and whether individual reps are coachable.

How to track it: Calculate the slope of each rep's scores over time. Simple approach: compare their average score from the most recent 30 days to the previous 30 days.

  • Positive slope (Up): Scores are improving. The program is working for this rep.
  • Flat: Scores aren't changing. The rep may need different drills, different coaching, or different motivation.
  • Negative slope (Down): Scores are declining. Investigate — this could indicate disengagement, burnout, or a change in drill difficulty.

How to build your scorecard

Phase 1: Start simple (Week 1-2)

You don't need a dashboard tool to start. A spreadsheet works.

  1. List your reps in rows.
  2. List your top 3 competitors as column groups.
  3. For each competitor, track: sessions completed this month, average score, highest-difficulty objection passed.
  4. Add a "last practiced" date — this surfaces reps who haven't practiced recently.

Update it weekly. Share it with the team. The act of making practice visible drives behavior change faster than any incentive.

Phase 2: Add automation (Week 3-4)

Layer 1: The headline. "We are 72% ready against our top 3 competitors. That's up from 54% last quarter." A single number, directional, with context.

Layer 2: The gaps. "Our biggest gap is Competitor B — only 30% of the team is proficient. Competitor B appeared in 42 deals last quarter and we won 28% of them. The ultimate validation of a readiness scorecard is correlation with win rates. If reps with higher readiness scores win more competitive deals, the scorecard isn't just a training metric — it's a revenue predictor.

Track this quarterly: for each rep, plot their average readiness score against their win rate in competitive deals. After 2-3 quarters of data, the correlation typically becomes clear. Reps in the top quartile of readiness scores win competitive deals at 1.5-2x the rate of reps in the bottom quartile.

When you can show that data to your CRO, the conversation shifts from "Why should we invest in competitive training?" to "How do we get every rep to the top quartile?"

That's the scorecard doing its job.
